Horse Feeding Guidelines

A practical South Florida reference from our team — because proper care starts long before the ride.

1
Rule #1 — Always
Forage First

Horses are hindgut fermenters built to eat small amounts continuously. Feed 1.5–2% of body weight in quality hay per day (15–20 lbs for a 1,000 lb horse). Good forage buffers stomach acid, fuels hindgut bacteria, reduces ulcer risk, and prevents sand impaction. Grain supplements forage — it never replaces it.

Daily Feeding Reference

Horse Type Hay / Day Grain Key Focus
Idle / Easy Keeper 1.5% BW Balancer only Weight & minerals
Light / Pleasure 1.8% BW 2–4 lbs Steady energy
Moderate Work 2.0% BW 4–6 lbs Stamina, topline
Heavy / Competition 2.0% BW 6–10 lbs Peak performance
Senior Horse 2.0–2.5% BW 4–8 lbs senior Digestion, joints
Pregnant / Lactating 2.0–2.5% BW 4–8 lbs Protein & calcium
Growing Youngster 2.0% BW 0.5–1% BW Balanced growth
Metabolic / IR / EMS 1.5% BW low-NSC Low-starch only Blood sugar control

BW = Body Weight. Split grain into 2–3 meals. Never exceed 5 lbs in a single feeding.

Hay Selection Guide

Hay Type Protein Best Suited For
Premium Alfalfa 15–22% Hard keepers, lactating mares, young horses
Timothy 1st Cut 8–10% All-around; lower sugar, excellent fiber
Timothy 2nd Cut 10–12% Performance horses; softer, more palatable
Orchard Grass 10–12% Horses that refuse timothy; highly palatable
T/A Blend 12–16% Performance; balances fiber + protein
Peanut Hay 14–18% Underweight horses & growing youngsters
Teff Grass 8–10% Metabolic/IR/Cushings horses — ultra-low NSC

"We're very picky about our hay — if a shipment isn't up to our standards, we send it back." — Vieri Bracco

South Florida Specifics

Electrolytes year-round

Florida heat causes 2–4x more sweat loss than cool climates. Supplement sodium, potassium & chloride daily in summer.

🏜️
Sand colic prevention

Sandy Loxahatchee soil is ingested with every bite off the ground. Feed hay in racks. Use psyllium (SandClear/SandPurge) one week per month.

🦟
Flies never stop

Fly season is year-round here. Combine topical sprays with a feed-through IGR supplement for full-season protection.

🏆
WEF & show stress

Hauling and stabling changes spike ulcer risk. Use gastric buffering supplements before and during show weeks.

Pro Tips from Our Team

  • Transition any new feed gradually over 10–14 days to avoid digestive upset.
  • Weigh, don't scoop. The same scoop of pellets vs. textured feed can differ by 2–3 lbs.
  • Fresh, clean water at all times — horses drink 5–10 gallons daily, more in summer.
  • If hay quality is unknown, add a ration balancer to fill vitamin and mineral gaps.
  • Have your hay tested — NSC levels matter greatly for metabolic horses and visual appearance doesn't tell the full story.
  • Not sure what to feed? Call us — we offer free nutritional consultations and barn visits.

Signs to Watch For

Call your vet or schedule a nutrition consult if you notice:

  • Sudden weight loss or gain
  • Poor topline despite adequate feeding
  • Recurring colic episodes
  • Loose or dark manure lasting 48+ hours
  • Coat dullness or excessive shedding
  • Hoof rings or laminitis signs
  • Changes in energy, attitude or focus
  • Difficulty chewing or dropping feed
Free barn visits available — call (561) 633-6003 to schedule a nutritional consultation.
